How to access the PsycINFO database

Go to the WSC Library website: http://www.worcester.edu/Library

Click on ARTICLES & DATABASES

Click on PsycINFO=

If off campus, type your WSC network user name/password, click login<= span style=3D'mso-spacerun:yes'> OR click Off Campus Access Informatio= n

If you are not taken directly into the database, click again on PsycINFO=

How to search the = PsycINFO database

1. Determine all the parts of your topic

2. Click on THESAURUS.

Click on Relevancy Ranked.

In the Browsing PsycINFO Thesaurus box, type the key word(s) for one part of your topic. Click on Brows= e.

To see the “definition” of a term, click on the term. Choose the most appropriate term a= nd write it down.

In the Browsing PsycINFO Thesaurus box, type the key word(s) for another part of your topic. Click on Brows= e.

To see the "definition" of a term, click on the term. Scan the terms given, deciding on = the most appropriate and write it down.

Repeat these steps for all remaining parts of the topic.

3. Click on Advanced Search.

4. Type the first subject heading in the first box, choose SU Subjects or DE Subj= ects [exact] or KW Keywords [these are provided by the author]= or Select a Field from the list of fields..

Type the second subject heading in the second box, choose SU Subjects or DE Subjects [exact= ] or KW Keywords [these are provided by the author] or Select a Field from the list of fields.

Continue filling in the boxes until all parts of your topic are listed.

5. To search for the proper name of a program or test, type the proper name in the search box, choose the appropriate field to search (TM Tests & Measures= or TI title or AB abstract).

6. Scroll down to the “Limit your results” box to limit your search as appropriate.

PsycINFO cov= ers several types of publications. Click on the desired type in the Publication Type box or in the Document Type box

Peer -reviewed journal = is listed in the Publication Type box

Book is listed in the Publicat= ion Type box

Chap= ter is listed in the Document Type box. (The title of t= he entire book appears in the record following the word “in.”)

To eliminate dissertations from your search, check “Exclude Dissertations”

Check English (PsycINFO has a lot of non-English resources)

See the Methodology box to select Empirical Study, and/or Quantitative Study and/or Literature Review [hold the Ctrl key to highligh= t more than one item] if necessary

See the Population Group box to se= lect human or animal if necessary

7. Click on SEARCH.=

Within the Results List many re= cords indicate “Linked Full Text” which usually requires payment.

8. To see the abstract (summary) for every record in the Result List, click on Preferences, then Detailed, then Save. The abstract for each record will = show in the Result List.

To see the full record which includes all subjects (descriptors) attached to the record, click on the title of the article.

To save a record for later printing, click on Add to Folder. To see all items in the folder, cl= ick on Folder View.

9.&nbs= p; To print a full record, = click on File, Print, choose Print Pages, specify 1-2, click OK.

To print your added records, click on F= older View. Click on the Print icon= . Click on the appropriate boxes in = the Print Manager box. Click on Print, OK.
